Feb 6, 2007 - POTD try #2

Thanks everyone for the comments on the first shot. I've adjusted some settings and I'm trying again. Manual-(First Time ever!!!) ISO-400, f-stop - 7.1, Shutter Speed 1/15 sec What do you think? Is it any better? I had to take the compensation tab -2 to get rid of the highlights on the histogram too. I used the flash too. My house is just extremely dark and I used photoshop to try to get rid of the edges of the foam board.

Ok, you've done a really good job not blowing out the doll this time, yay!

Where are you bouncing your flash? You're ending up with some fairly harsh shadows. Lower your Fstop to about 5ish so the flash output doesn't need to automatically be so high to compensate. Also, try bouncing on different things and at different distances from the flash head and see what the effect is.

You are definitely on your way!

Oh, one other thing, get your subject away from the board a bit so that the shadows you do get have a chance to fall downwards instead of straight back onto the board. Maybe try a smaller subject for the time being so that you can get it a foot away from the board.

Oh - Great job on this second attempt! I can't get to manual yet. I have been using aperture priority - an dI definitely can't get my flash right! I think you did a great job :)

Big improvement!
I agree with the advice given. I'd try bouncing your flash differntly, and moving her away from the background. You are on your way!

I agree - much better! And I also agree that moving the subject away from the backdrop as much as possible will help with those harsh shadows! Congrats on your first manual shot - it's exciting isn't it?
